Should You Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner?

If you’ve read our previous posts, you are fully aware of some of the problems that can develop in A/C units. What we didn’t cover was whether you should consider an AC repair or replace the unit if you encounter these issues. You may have heard of the $5,000 rule. If you multiply the age of the equipment by the repair cost and if that exceeds $5,000, then you can replace the unit. If the total is less, you can repair it.

Replace
1 – Your AC unit is over 10-12 years old.
2 – Your home has excessive dust.
3 – You have humidity problems in your home.
4 – Your equipment needs frequent repairs.
5 – If the unit is noisy or is leaving rooms in your house too hot or cold.

Energy Star estimates a 20 percent savings on heating and cooling costs when investing in a new, energy-efficient AC unit.
As always, we recommend you discussing your options with a professional HVAC technician whether to repair or replace your current AC Unit. You may have an older system that is working perfectly fine and has not impacted your energy bill. If that’s the case, you probably do not need to replace it. However, we do recommend servicing your HVAC system annually. To schedule an appointment with us or ask us any questions, please give us a call at, 813-689-2082!
