Warmer Months Ahead: How to Save Energy with Your A/C Unit

On average, June is the warmest month of the year for the Tampa area. This usually means cranking up your A/C unit and trying to stay as cool as possible. With so much energy usage, how can you save money while helping the environment as well? Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of some helpful tips to reduce costs and effects to the environment.

Use ceiling fans – Did you know ceiling fans can reduce thermostat settings by 4 degrees and use less energy than the A/C Unit? Just remember to turn them off before you leave your home.

Appliance repairs – It’s important to keep your HVAC system in the best possible working condition. To do this, be sure to get annual filter checkups and tune ups. Filters in window air conditioners also need to be replaced or washed out annually.

Turn off heated appliances – Making meals is a daily reoccurrence. Often times, this involves using your oven which increases the heat not only in your kitchen but in your entire home. Try using a microwave and stovetop to cook food. This will drastically reduce the heat and allow your air conditioner to work less.

Avoid placing furniture over vents/putting appliances near the thermostat – This not only reduces the air circulation within your home, but it can also cause your air conditioning unit to work longer and harder and use more energy.

Keep your HVAC unit serviced – This is incredibly important. A small issue left unattended can lead to a much larger problem that is costlier and more energy consuming. It’s best to have your HVAC system serviced annually to be sure it works properly.
