British Thermal Unit (Btu): It is a traditional unit of heat, commonly referred to as Btu or BTU. One Btu is the amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. It is typically recorded as BTU’s per hour.
AC Tonnage: One ton is the amount of heat removed by an air conditioner that would melt one ton of ice in a 24-hour period. The value of one ton is commonly defined in Btu per hour. To melt a ton of ice in 24 hours, 288,000 Btu is required. Divide 288,000 by 24 hours and the result is: 12,000 Btu per hour equals one ton.
