AC Tonnage: The amount of heat removed by an air conditioner that would melt one ton of ice in a 24-hour period is equal to one BTU. The value of one ton is commonly defined in Btu per hour. To melt a ton of ice in 24 hours, 288,000 Btu is required. Divide 288,000 by 24 hours and the result is: 12,000 Btu per hour equals one ton.
