AC Tonnage Calculator

New AC Tonnage Calculator estimates proper air conditioner size.

AC Tonnage Calculator

What is an ac tonnage calculator? An ac tonnage calculator is a tool that generates an estimated tonnage value, based upon characteristics of the building. The tool will help you determine what size air conditioning system will provide the most effective operation for your home or office.  A properly sized air conditioner system will be more efficient, reduce energy costs and make rooms comfortable for occupants. In contrast, an air conditioning system that is too large or too small may result in reduced performance. Consequently, this could increase energy costs, have a shorter lifespan and fail to adequately cool interior rooms.

Estimating AC Tonnage

The ac tonnage calculator uses four building characteristics to generate the estimated value:

  • Square Feet
  • Number of People
  • Amount of Windows
  • Number of Exterior Doors
  • and more

Calculating these values provides a rough estimate of proper AC Tonnage.

In a professional tonnage estimate, additional factors may be considered to determine this value. Local climate, ceiling height, and insulation are just a few additional characteristics that air conditioning professionals may consider. HVAC technicians use a sophisticated formula to determine the proper size for an air conditioning system. Therefore, before you purchase a new ac system, you should have an HVAC professional calculate the tonnage using the “Manual J”, “Manual S” and/or “Manual D” methods. These ac tonnage calculator formulas are recommended by the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Contractors Association Inc. (RACCA). Nonetheless, using the ac tonnage calculator for a rough estimate can give you a good idea of what size air conditioner you will need.

AC Tonnage Terminology

British Thermal Unit (Btu): It is a traditional unit of heat, commonly referred to as Btu or BTU. The amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit is equal to one Btu. It is typically recorded as BTU’s per hour.

AC Tonnage: The amount of heat removed by an air conditioner that would melt one ton of ice in a 24-hour period is equal to one BTU. The value of one ton is commonly defined in Btu per hour. To melt a ton of ice in 24 hours, 288,000 Btu is required. Divide 288,000 by 24 hours and the result is: 12,000 Btu per hour equals one ton.
