The air conditioner you invest in dictates your comfort for seasons to come. That’s why you should find one that employs advanced A/C technology for optimal comfort, convenience and energy efficiency. Here is the top advanced A/C technology to look for.

High SEER rating

SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio. A high SEER rating indicates that the air conditioner consumes less electricity when delivering a specific cooling output. Although many old air conditioners are rated at 6 SEER or less, today’s A/C technology allows the most efficient units to reach SEER ratings in the mid 20s. The minimum rating allowed by law today is 13 SEER. Of course, don’t settle for the minimum; go for an Energy Star qualified air conditioner with a high SEER rating and additional advanced features.

It’s because of the following A/C technology offerings that high SEER ratings are possible:

  • Thermal expansion valve — This is more efficient than a traditional piston valve and allows for a higher SEER rating.
  • Variable-speed air handler — This advanced A/C technology gives the blower motor the ability to operate at various speeds, similar to the air conditioning in your car. More air handler speeds means more even temperatures, less wasted energy and quieter airflow.
  • Fan-only switch — Sometimes all you need at night is continued ventilation rather than air conditioning. This advanced A/C technology allows for continued ventilation with substantial energy savings.
  • Automatic-delay fan switch — This allows the fan to continue running after the compressor has shut off, which circulates all the cold air out of the ductwork and into the living space.
  • Filter check light — You know how important it is to change the filter regularly, but it’s a task that’s easy to forget. With a filter check light, the air conditioner tells you when a predetermined number of operating hours have elapsed since the previous filter change.
  • Quiet operation — Don’t disturb the neighbors or disrupt outdoor family activities; instead, choose an air conditioner with quiet operation.
