AC not working? A mid-summer, humid 100-degree day is not the greatest time for your air conditioner to stop working. Unfortunately, this can happen, but before it ever does, it’s good to become familiar with some common problems that can leave your AC not working.  Air conditioning units can require maintenance. While you should always contact a professional about repairs and installations, it’s good to have an idea of what the issue is beforehand.

Refrigerant leaks – If you find a leak, adding more refrigerant will not fix the problem. It is very important to have the refrigerant charge match the manufacturer’s specification; this ensures it is not over or under charged. Be sure to have a trained, professional technician take a look before attempting to fix it yourself.
Inadequate maintenance – Not keeping up with changing the air filters and allowing the AC coils to become dirty and clogged can cause the air conditioner to not work properly. Check filters at least once a month to ensure proper efficiency.
Sensor problems –AC units use a thermostat to determine when a room needs cooling. If issues develop, the thermostat may be damaged or can be obstructed preventing an accurate temperature reading, also being to near a vent, window, door, or heat generating appliance can cause inaccuracies causing you’re AC to malfunction.
Drainage problems – If the room unit is not mounted level, it could become clogged and lead to ineffective draining.  A whole home air conditioner’s condensate drain can also become plugged causing water to leak and cause additional damage to your HVAC system or your home.  Scheduling a regular check up of your equipment will help prevent this. Regularly check the condensate drain to avoid this and if a condensate leak starts you can turn your system off to avoid further damage and contact Gulf Coast immediately.
Electrical control failures –Turning the air conditioner frequently on and off can result in the compressor and fan controls to wear out. The corrosion of wire and terminals can also result in electrical issues. If any of these things become a problem within your system, please schedule a service call with a professional technician.

These are the most common issues that can leave your ac not working. While these common air conditioner problems can occur anytime, they can be more common during the warmer months and in warmer climates.
